Director of Planned Giving
Description: The Director is responsible for engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding alumni, parents, and friends to ensure a strong base of ongoing financial support through deferred gifts. The Director will serve as the liaison to the University’s older constituency base, the Old Guard, and coordinates all 50th and Old Guard reunion initiatives and organizing its fundraising program.
Responsibilities: The Director works with colleagues in the offices of major gifts, class relations, alumni and parent relations, and donor relations, and is responsible for establishing overall objectives and priorities for the planned giving office and for executing that plan. Develops marketing materials for print and online use; develops written marketing, engagement, solicitation and stewardship strategies, moves prospective donors through the traditional cultivation and solicitation cycle, solicits and closes deferred and reunion gifts. Identifies potential deferred giving donors, visits donors both independently and with major gift colleagues, develops planned giving proposals and reviews and edits trust, will and gift annuity agreements and life insurance contracts. Monitors and reviews probates in which the university is a beneficiary and consults with the university’s legal counsel and financial department as appropriate. A significant amount of time is spent in direct contact via telephone, email and written correspondence. The Director serves as the liaison to an academic school within the university and to various volunteer boards and will represent the university in a consistently professional and ethical manner.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, and 3+ years experience in fundraising with an emphasis on planned giving. Experience working with planned giving prospects and closing planned gifts, a proven record of successful face-to-face major gift solicitation, and significant experience working productively with donors, alumni, volunteers and professional advisors. A background in legal or financial planning is preferred, as is the ability to work and communicate effectively within a team and with a broad range of internal and external constituents, work independently, solve problems, handle confidential information, and navigate sensitive situations. Must be able to operate within a team and assist team members with challenges even when outside of the planned giving area and have excellent organizational and planning skills, keen attention to detail, the ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines and a willingness to travel. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are essential.
